FRAUDULENT SPAM E-MAIL CLAIMING TO BE FROM FBI DIRECTOR MUELLER

10/18/06—We have become aware of a bogus spam e-mail claiming to be from FBI Director Robert Mueller III. This scam appears to be a typical Nigerian scam; however, the attempt to defraud victims comes in two separate e-mails. The same e-mail address is used to deliver both phases of the spam.

07/24/06—We have received reports concerning a fraudulent e-mail claiming to be from the FBI.

The new e-mail hoax is similar to one described in a November 22, 2005, posting on the Internet Crime Complaint Center website. The e-mail includes a virus-laden attachment.

FBI Email Hoax Alert - From Internet Crime Complaint Center

The FBI has become aware of e-mails being generated with the subject line “FBI Investigation” and implying the e-mail originated from the FBI. The e-mail requests the recipient’s assistance by purchasing merchandise via the Internet. This e-mail is fictitious, and its origin is being investigated. The FBI would never direct someone to expend personal funds in furtherance of an investigation.

Fraudulent FBI Email Alert

The FBI <http://www.fbi.gov/cyberinvest/escams.htm> continues to see reports of email hoaxes similar to the 7/7/04 warning posted on the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) website. The individual closing the internet transaction changes on the email; otherwise, the text of the email is identical to the email circulated in July 2004. The following is the message brought to our attention:

NEW VIRUS IDENTIFIED: WAREZOV/STRATION WORM
.

We have become aware of a worm identified as Warezov/Stration Worm circulating as a spam e-mail quickly and effectively across the Internet. The spam e-mail claims the recipient's computer/IP address has been identified for malicious activity online. An attachment to the e-mail is purportedly a software used to clean the recipient's machine. This attached executable is the Trojan downloader portion of the worm itself.

Malicious Code: New fraudulent FBI email with Trojan Backdoor

Websense Security Labs has had several reports of a new fraudulent email posing as the FBI. On the heals of the recent sober mass-mailer, the email claims there is a new virus out and has a warning from the 'USS-ISS, USA Internet Security System' that more than 170,000 workstations and 300,000 accounts have the new virus. The virus has been dubbed W32/zeRX.Virus-x001.

Spammers using the passing of the Pope to defraud people

A new spam campaign is exploiting people's interest in the death of Pope John Paul II. "In the greedy world of spam e-mail and electronic fraud, nothing is sacred-not even the death of the Pope John Paul II."[1] "The use of the Pope's death as a hook to defraud unsuspecting consumers is part of a trend linking spam to news of national or international interest, prompting people to open e-mail they ordinarily might delete."[2]

NIGERIAN 419 SCAM - NEW SOPHISTICATED TECHNIQUE

The FBI has become aware of a new sophisticated technique used to obtain funds through the 419 scam. The scam contains the usual e-mail requesting assistance in transferring millions of dollars out of Nigeria. The sophistication begins when the recipient is directed to open a bank account at a Suffolk England Bank and is provided a link to the bank's Web site.

The IC3 has received reports concerning another e-mail hoax claiming to be from the FBI. The new e-mail hoax is similar to the warning posted on the IC3 website on November 22, 2005. The attachment to the e-mail message contains a virus.

AUTO AUCTION FRAUD

The IC3 has received a significant number of recent complaints regarding Internet auction fraud involving the sale of automobiles purported to be located outside of the United States. The typical fraud involves an auction for a vehicle said to be in Europe, and for which the buyer pays with Western Union or other wire transfer mechanism. The buyer does not receive his or her automobile in these auctions, and the money is not recoverable.

FRAUDULENT FBI EMAIL BEING SENT BY LOTTERY SCAMMERS

The FBI has been alerted to a fraudulent email which purports to be from the FBI and attempts to convince recipients to send money to secure prizes won in an international lottery.
The email contains Director Mueller's name and office address, and typically comes under the title, "FBI Internet Fraud Watch/Alert". The return email address may be listed as FBIfraudalert@hotmail.co.uk, or FBIfraudwatch@hotmail.co.uk.
