OPINION: ARE WE WINNING THE BATTLE AGAINTS e-CRIME?

A recent survey of security and law enforcement executives shows that the fight against electronic crimes (e-crimes) continues to be an uphill battle.

Amongst the significant findings, respondents were asked on what security issues they spent the majority of their time. If the media is to be believed, one would expect the answers to include preventing phishing attempts, Denial of Service attacks and online extortion.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> read more

Will SOCA kick online fraud into touch?

Tony Blair has launched the UK's very own FBI to fight back against organised crime.

No more Mr Nice Guy: UK gets tough on hi-tech criminals

London’s Court of Appeal has turned down Welsh virus writer Simon Vallor’s appeal to shorten his two-year custodial sentence. Vallor, who was convicted on three counts of releasing a computer virus contravening the Computer Misuse Act 1990, claimed at the time (as is the virus writer’s wont) that he had been ignorant of the extent of damage his actions would cause.

FEAR OF E-CRIME WIDESPREAD BUT ILL-DEFINED

"Fear of e-Crime is widespread but ill-defined. This fear is undermining the image of the UK (as well as the internet) as a good place for e-business and restraining growth in e-commerce. Ministers are being pushed into legislation to address perceived fears without providing the resources to enforce existing law or giving the private sector the frameworks it needs to protect itself."

FEAR OF REPORTING E-CRIME

FRAUD and electronic crime was burgeoning yet was too often swept under the carpet by people and companies who were too ashamed to admit they have been swindled, a report said.

PUBLIC FUNDS AND POWERS OF EFCC

If we are truly being guided by the provisions of the 1999 Constitution while carrying out our responsibilities to the society, an agency like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) cannot initiate investigations on the expenditure of the public funds of any State government or even prosecute its officials sleeped in corrupt activities.

The GSM revolution brought an unbelievable ease into the lives of many. But it has become the source of a new spectre. If you haven't received a phony international call from a 'supposed' relative, eager to remit some funds to you with some proviso, you probably would very soon.

NIGERIA E-MAIL SCAM a.k.a 419 SCAM a.k.a ADVANCE FEE FRAUD:

Is this e-mail real?  In a word, NO!  It is an age old Con perpetrated mostly by foreign crime syndicates who have honed and crafted it to make it sound and appear very believable. The offer of imaginary millions is very tempting to most. Dreams of new homes, cars, boats, exotic vacations, and the making of a better life often swirl in people's heads.

However, most people use common sense and remember what their parents taught them, "If it sounds to good to be true, it usually is."   For those not so lucky, the consequences of this Con can be devastating, both financially and emotionally.
